TPC River Highlands

Original

Overview

Located 10 miles south of Hartford, Conn., TPC River Highlands has been the long-time host of the PGA TOUR’s Travelers Championship, previously known as the Buick Championship, Canon Greater Hartford Open and Insurance City Open.

A well-balanced mix of long and short holes, Bobby Weed and Pete Dye’s layout adeptly combines contemporary strategy with throw-back aesthetics. 2008 Travelers Championship winner, Stewart Cink, notes that TPC River Highlands has, “four of the most exciting finishing holes in a group anywhere in the world.”

Challenge

1928: Founded as Middletown Golf Club, it was renamed Edgewood Country Club in 1934.

1984: Pete Dye redesigned nine holes of the golf course to Tournament Players Club (TPC) Network standards.

1989: Bobby Weed oversaw a second golf course renovation and significant club improvements. He directed one of the first golf course repurposing projects with newly acquired property, adding golf holes within a residential development.

Weed’s redesigned 18-hole layout was completed with PGA TOUR player consultants Roger Maltbie and Howard Twitty. The club was then renamed TPC River Highlands.

2016: Bobby Weed Golf Design worked in conjunction with PGA TOUR Design Services on a course-wide bunker renovation. ShotLink data was used to enhance strategy. Numerous maintenance items were also addressed.

Approach

Spread across 148 acres, stately corridors of maple, oak, sycamore and eastern white pine trees frame gently rolling fairways. The golf course includes bentgrass from tee to green and bluegrass-fescue rough. This beautiful contrast, paired with a plethora of half-par holes, makes for a great challenge.

Multiple ponds and strategically placed bunkers add to the layout’s sandy, well-drained aesthetic. TPC River Highlands is a certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program, which supports ecologically-sound land management and wildlife habitats.

Solution

“TPC River Highlands, overlooking the Connecticut River, offers a variety of half-par holes and an exciting four-hole finish in an amphitheater setting like no other.” -Bobby Weed

In 2018, the Travelers Championship earned the “Players Choice Award” for the second consecutive year, voted on by PGA TOUR players for the quality of the course, tournament services, hospitality and attendance.
